Beginner's Guide

Creating Characters

You are now ready to create your first NPC (Non-Player Character). You can click on Create, Character from the menu or click the Smiley face icon on the toolbar. The Add Character window will pop up. You'll have to give your character a name, gender, initial location and description. I decided on a pet cat.

I named the cat Fluffy. He is Male. You will want to give him a few aliases, and give him a description. You can write any description you want. Now let's skip over to the Conversation tab. Cats usually can't speak- well, unless they are magical, but this isn't that type of game. Select Add New Subject and a new conversation window will appear. In the conversation subject window, just put a *. Putting a wildcard in the subject field will display the given response whenever other conversation subjects do not apply. This will also eliminate the default response 'Character does not respond to your question'.

In the Reply to Above text box, put a message that you want the player to see every time they attempt to ask the cat a question. I have chosen the response below.

Fluffy curls around your feet, looking up, giving you a curious meow.

If this were a speaking character, you could enter several subjects separated by a comma and it will display the message that you type in the text box. For example if I wanted the cat to talk, in the subject I might enter the following:

food, hungery, kibble, treats, snacks

Then give a reply like:

"I am pretty hungy, now that you mention it. A mouse would make a nice snack right about now."

The above response would be given if the player asked the cat about any of the subjects that you listed and separated by a comma.

Back to where we were...

Click the OK button to accept. Now you are going to give the cat some movement, so click on the Movement tab. First we are going to change what it will display when the character is in the room. The default message is 'Character is here.' I like a little more detail, so I replaced that with a description of my own.

The kitty is nearby, pawing at his whiskers.

or

Fluffy is grooming himself nearby.

You will want to show the character entering and leaving the room, so check the box that says Show characters entering/exiting the room. Now change the description of when the character enters the room. Though there is one word in the text box, you can add much more. You can also change the what it displays when the character exits. I have chosen the following:

carelessly saunters in

quickly rushes off

As you can see, those are just sentence fragments. We do it this way because the Characters name will be placed in front of the text we enter, and the room will be displayed after the fragment.

Now, look to the top of the window. You will see a button that says Add Walk. Click on that so we can give the cat some movement. For now, we are going to give the cat a simple walk that starts immediately. So leave everything the same, and click Add Walk. A new window appears and wants to know where you want to move the character to. Select Follow Player from the drop down list, and leave the value at 1, then click OK. Check the box that says Loop Walk when finished. Click OK, then click Add Character.

Save your game and run it. Try moving back and forth between the rooms you have created. The cat should follow you wherever you go.
